Abstract

The phenomenon of aging developed societies is one of the most significant demographic trends, bringing with it economic, social, and cultural consequences. The extension of average life expectancy, perceived as a civilizational achievement, presents nations and governments with challenges related to demographic future, the necessity of providing care for aging populations, and the stability of pension systems. Societal aging also poses a key challenge for management in social policy and social work, which is particularly evident in the example of Slovakia. According to the latest statistical data, Slovakia is also experiencing an inevitable aging process, characterized by a decrease in birth rates and a growing proportion of older people, which represents a serious challenge primarily for social policy and social work. The article analyzes this phenomenon from a Slovak perspective, highlighting the need for continuous monitoring of dynamic changes within the senior group to create optimal conditions that meet their needs, while simultaneously preventing social exclusion. A methodological analysis of statistical data indicates the irreversibility of the societal aging process and emphasizes the necessity of building and strengthening intergenerational ties, as well as promoting solidarity, to minimize the risk of seniors' dependence on younger generations. Social policy actions should focus on supporting seniors in solving problems typical for their age, ensuring them a dignified and active old age, and full participation in social life. The promotion of active aging policy is essential in this context to mitigate the negative effects of societal aging and fully utilize the potential of older people.
